The Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre is gearing up to export its first batch of fresh coconuts (xiem coconut variety) to China, the Voice of Vietnam reported.

This development marks a significant milestone for the province, opening up new export opportunities and increasing the value of its coconut products.

Following the recent signing of a protocol for fresh coconut exports between Vietnam and China, Ben Tre province has identified 13 eligible coconut growing areas for export, according to  Mr. Doan Van Danh, Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The department plans to hold a ceremony in October to commemorate the first official shipment to China.

A delegation from China visited Ben Tre to assess and inspect the 13 selected growing areas, ensuring their compliance with Chinese import requirements,  Mr. Danh said.

Ben Tre currently has approximately 16,000 ha of fresh coconut plantations, representing 20% of its total coconut garden area. Of these, 133 growing areas, covering nearly 8,400 ha and involving over 12,800 households, meet the necessary production standards for export.
