Seasports expected to handle 1.5 million tons of cargo by 2030
The Government has approved the adjustment of the national seaport system development master plan.
The seaport system of Vietnam is expected to handle 1.25-1.5 million tons of cargo by 2030, including 46-54 million tons of container cargo.
The target is set under the adjusted national seaport system development master plan in 2021-2030 with a vision towards 2050 which has been approved under Prime Ministerrial Decision No. 442/QD-TTg, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on May 22, 2024.
The seaport system's handling cargo capacity is targeted to increase by 4.2-4.8% annually.
Under the plan, the seaport system is also able to serve 17.4 – 18.8 million passengers by 2030.
The plan is aimed at meeting the demand for import and export of goods, trade between regions nationwide, transshipment and cargo in transit, and domestic and international passenger transportation.
Regarding infrastructure development, the plan gives priority to developing international gateway ports, including Lach Huyen in northern Hai Phong port city, and Cai Mep-Thi Vai in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, and building Can Gio International Transshipment Port in HCM City.
The plan also includes the gradual development of an international transshipment port at Van Phong Port in Khanh Hoa Province and the potential development of Tran De Port in Soc Trang Province to serve the Mekong Delta.
