The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has taken steps to regulate cross-border e-commerce platforms like Temu and Shein, which have been operating in the country without proper authorization.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long told a regular Government press briefing on November 9.

The MoIT has issued four specific requirements for these platforms.

First, Temu and Shein must register their operations with the MoIT by November 2024.

Second, the platforms must inform Vietnamese consumers about their ongoing registration process and the lack of official authorization so far.

Third, all promotional and marketing activities that violate Vietnamese laws must be suspended.

Fourth, the platforms must ensure compliance with regulations related to information security, taxes, customs, and other relevant areas.

Thus, with the above four measures, Temu is currently implementing them and must complete registration with the MoIT in November 2024. Regarding Shein, the ministry  has also requested compliance with legal regulations and completion of registration in November 2024.

The MoIT has warned that failure to comply with these requirements could result in severe consequences, including app blocking, domain blocking, and cargo clearance suspension.

Mr. Long said the MoIT will continue to cooperate with competent agencies to strengthen monitoring, detection, and handling of warehouses and cargo distribution points (if any) of unregistered cross-border e-commerce platforms.

At the same time, the ministry will strengthen inspection and supervision, promptly detect and severely handle violations in trade, especially e-commerce.
