Metro Line 2 in Ho Chi Minh City projected to start construction in 2026
Land compensation and clearance procedures for the Metro Line 2 project have been completed, with 99 per cent of the cleared land ready for construction.
According to the latest report by the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office, in 2025, numerous large-scale transport and urban redevelopment projects will be implemented in the southern city.
Among them, Metro Line No. 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) project has completed 100 per cent of the land compensation and clearance procedures, with 99 per cent of the cleared land ready for construction. The relocation of technical infrastructure at 12 station sites has achieved over 30 per cent of the planned progress and is expected to be fully completed by the second quarter of 2025.
However, the project is currently facing obstacles related to the pricing of contract packages and the timeline for key construction components, including underground stations, tunnels, and elevated sections. Additionally, the project's funding source has been adjusted from ODA loans to the state budget, pushing the earliest possible groundbreaking date to 2026.
The Metro Line No. 2 spans over 11 km, with 9.2 km running underground, while the remaining sections include elevated tracks and the lead-in to the Tham Luong depot in District 12. The project features nine underground stations and one elevated station.
Once completed, the metro line will connect with the Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien) at Ben Thanh Station in District 1 and integrate with future transit lines, facilitating east-west mobility through the city's center.
Alongside the metro project, work is being accelerated on ten main construction packages under Component Project 1 of the Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3. These include bridge and tunnel components, as well as ground treatment for weak soil, with an overall completion rate of approximately 30 per cent.
The city has mandated an expedited construction schedule to ensure that nearly 15 km of the Ring Road 3 elevated section (passing through Thu Đuc City) will be operational by the end of this year.
Additionally, infrastructure works near the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway interchange must be completed in time to synchronize with the Nhon Trach bridge project which is scheduled to be completed by April 30.
For Component Project 2 of Ring Road 3, land clearance has reached 99.8 per cent, with only three cases yet to be resolved. Local authorities are continuing negotiations and preparing for enforcement measures if necessary.
As for the construction of Terminal T3 at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, progress has exceeded 85 per cent. The facility has been fully powered, with an expanded aircraft parking apron now in operation. Interior finishing work is underway, with the terminal scheduled to be completed and operational by April 30.
