The Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute has emphasized the importance of restarting nuclear power projects for socio-economic development.

Deputy Director of the Institute Pham Quang Minh highlighted the need for a green transition in electricity generation to combat climate change and achieve CO2 balance, as Vietnam had committed to in COP26 and COP28.

He noted that many countries are combining nuclear power with renewable energy sources to provide reliable and stable baseload electricity. Given its virtually CO2-free nature, nuclear power will be a significant source of electricity in future energy mixes.

Restarting nuclear power projects aligns with Vietnam's sustainable energy development policies, energy security goals, and commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Mr. Minh argued that nuclear power is crucial for ensuring energy security amidst rising electricity consumption.

If nuclear power projects are restarted, he emphasized the importance of utilizing advanced nuclear technologies and adhering to the highest safety standards.

Developing nuclear power will also create opportunities for: developing a highly skilled workforce for national development; promoting scientific and technological advancement, particularly in healthcare, agriculture, industry, and environmental resources; and boosting foundational industries such as mechanical engineering, measurement, automation, chemical technology, and metallurgy.
