Manufacturers and importers being assigned responsibility for recycling, collection, and treatment is considered an effective solution in resolving the problem of plastic waste. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) has specified the implementation roadmap for the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) project. From 2024, EPR will be applied to packaging products, batteries, lubricants, and tires, from 2025 to electrical and electronic products, and from 2027 to vehicles.
Vietnam’s investment in waste management infrastructure has not kept pace with waste discharge. Nearly 70 per cent of the material value of plastic is not re-used, equal to $2.2-$2.9 billion each year.
