According to the Ministry of Transport (MoT), more than VND14 trillion ($611.9 million) is expected to be allocated from the State budget for investment in railway infrastructure in the 2021-2025 period, meeting 5.8 per cent of demand over the next ten years. More than VND227 trillion ($9.9 billion) will be needed for railway infrastructure in the 2026-2030 period, or 16 times higher than in 2021-2025.
Funds of VND240 trillion ($10.54 billion) are needed to develop railway infrastructure over the next decade, and construction of the first two sections of the North-South high-speed railway will start in 2028, the Ministry of Transport has said. It will also prioritize investment in railways connecting Vietnam with China, to facilitate exports to Europe.
