There is still ample opportunity for Vietnam and India to boost their cooperation in agriculture, as two-way trade value in the field remains modest and falls short of potential, according to Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan.

During his meeting with Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal while he was attending the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting on June 14-17 in New Delhi, Mr. Hoan said high tariffs and non-tariff barriers in India on Vietnam’s agriculture, forestry and fisheries products are among the obstacles impeding trade in the sector.

He proposed the two sides open their markets to fruit and vegetables and sign bilateral trade agreements to facilitate imports and exports.

Vietnam exports a wide range of farm produce to India, including coffee, tea, pepper, cashew nuts, rubber, and fish.

Two-way trade turnover in agriculture, forestry and fisheries reached $1.87 billion last year.
