During the 2021-2030 period, the airport's design capacity will accommodate approximately 10 million passengers and 25,000 tons of cargo annually.

After 20 years of impressive growth, Vietnam's Phu Quoc seeks to solidify its position as a premier island destination, but challenges remain.

The 220 kV Kien Binh - Phu Quoc transmission line, the longest offshore overhead power transmission line in Southeast Asia at 80.4 km and with total investment of over VND2.2 trillion ($90.4 million), was put into operation on October 14. The line will increase the power supply capacity for Phu Quoc Island in the Mekong Delta’s Kien Giang province by about five-fold compared to the current load and will meet needs to 2035.

Resort real estate on Phu Quoc Island is quite diverse, and includes the first casino for Vietnamese citizens, the largest safari park in Southeast Asia, and the world’s longest sea-crossing cable car. The market is still to develop sustainably, however. The island city should not only be a tourist destination but should also have a marine economic center and become a new financial center in the region.

Vietjet Air opened four more routes on June 22 connecting Vietnam and India, including Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi with Mumbai and Phu Quoc Island with New Delhi and Mumbai. The carrier was the first to conduct direct flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and the Indian capital and Mumbai. It therefore now has six routes between Vietnam and India.

With a high urbanization rate, it is expected that Phu Quoc Island will see a “revolution” in expanding and modernizing its urban area. Vietnam’s first island city will not only be a unique, high quality tourism center in the future but also an economic - financial center in the region.

Investors are returning to Vietnam’s resort real estate market to take advantage of opportunities as supply increases and especially on Phu Quoc Island, which is preparing to pilot welcoming international visitors from November 20.

A pilot program welcoming international tourists to Phu Quoc Island has been postponed until the end of November or early December, when foreign tourists travel the most. All of Phu Quoc’s population will be vaccinated from September 24 to 27.

In Document No. 6345/VPCP-KGVX, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said that the Prime Minister has agreed with a proposal from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on a six-month pilot to welcome international tourists to Phu Quoc Island from October.
