China remains top market for Vietnam's cassava
China accounts for 92.85% in volume and 91.77% in value of Vietnam's total cassava and cassava product export.
Vietnam’s cassava and cassava product exports totaled 2.62 million tons in 2024, with value estimated at $1.15 billion. This represents an 11.1% decrease in volume and an 11.4% decrease in value compared to 2023, as reported by Vietnam Customs.
Despite the decline, cassava and cassava products remained a significant agricultural export commodity, with their export value surpassing $1 billion.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Import-Export Department, the average export price of cassava and its products in 2024 saw a slight decrease from the previous year.
This was attributed to the impact of storms and floods on livestock and poultry, which in turn reduced China’s demand for animal feed and kept export cassava prices low in recent months.
China continued to be the largest consumer of Vietnamese cassava and cassava products, accounting for 92.85% in volume and 91.77% in value of Vietnam's total exports in this category.
In 2024, exports to China reached 2.43 million tons, valued at $1.06 billion, marking a 9.8% decrease in volume and a 10.6% decrease in value compared to 2023. The Import-Export Department noted that the slowdown in demand from China significantly impacted Vietnam's cassava exports.
Last year, Vietnam witnessed limited penetration into such other cassava markets as the EU, South Korea, Japan, and the US, despite Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with them. In these markets, Vietnam’s cassava export volumes remain relatively low.
The ministry predicts that China will continue to be a major destination for Vietnamese cassava and cassava products in 2025.
