Ground broken on major road project in Mekong Delta

Attended by State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee held a breaking ground ceremony for the Interconnecting Road to National Highway No. 91 and the Long Xuyen City Bypass Construction project on January 18.

The project passes through two districts in Can Tho city and An Giang province’s Long Xuyen city, with total investment of more than VND2.1 trillion ($92.1 million) in the form of a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and reciprocal capital. It includes the construction of 15.3 km of new main road and the upgrading of about 2 km of National Highway No. 80. Construction is expected to be completed before December 31, 2023.

According to State President Phuc, the project will contribute to perfecting the existing local transport network while promoting socio-economic development in An Giang province and Can Tho city and the Mekong Delta as a whole. The MoT is to organize the management of the project and coordinate closely with branches and localities to ensure quality and progress.

The section of National Highway No. 91 passing through the center of Long Xuyen city is congested and no longer able to cope with traffic levels. The project is therefore urgent and necessary to ensure traffic flows along National Highway No. 91, within the Prime Minister-approved Road Network Planning for the 2021-2030 Period and Vision to 2050. It also aims to link traffic networks and ensure road safety in the Mekong Delta, while creating a driving force for socio-economic development.
