The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister to pilot a multi-story pig farming model in Vietnam.

This aims to innovate production methods, align with agricultural modernization, ensure biosecurity, conserve land resources, and boost economic efficiency.

According to MAE, pork is Vietnam's primary livestock sector, accounting for 62-65% of the country's total live-weight meat output.

In 2024, its production reached nearly 5.2 million tons, making Vietnam the world's sixth-largest producer. The nation also ranks fourth globally in pork consumption, with annual per capita consumsion of 37.04 kg, a sharp increase from 30 kg in 2021.

These figures underscore the pork industry's essential role in ensuring food security and driving agricultural development.

However, Vietnam's current farming model remains predominantly small-scale and fragmented, often lacking standardized disease safety protocols and the widespread adoption of high technology.

This vulnerability was starkly exposed during the 2019–2020 African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, which forced the culling of over 9 million pigs and caused estimated losses exceeding VND30 trillion (over $1.14 billion). The resulting supply shortages caused pork prices to skyrocket, directly impacting the consumer price index (CPI), public livelihood, and macroeconomic stability.

"Driven by the need to innovate farming models and apply advanced technology, the MAE has received proposals from two domestic enterprises, BAF Vietnam Agriculture JSC and Xuan Thien Thanh Hoa JSC, to pilot the multi-story pig farming model in Vietnam," stated the ministry in its proposal.

The ministry noted that China, which accounts for nearly 50% of global pork production and over 60% of consumption, has successfully implemented multi-story pig farming since 2018. To date, the country has built over 2,000 such facilities, comprising nearly 4,500 high-rise buildings dedicated to raising pigs.
