During his official visit to Singapore from January 8-10, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Mr. Patrick Lee, Cluster CEO, Singapore and ASEAN Markets, and Mr. Simon Cooper, CEO, Corporate, Commercial & Institutional Banking and Europe & The Americas at Standard Chartered Bank on January 9.

Prime Minister Chinh spoke highly of the bank’s proposed support in attracting foreign investment in Vietnam and asked that it provide financial products for green and renewable energy projects in Vietnam, thereby contributing to economic restructuring and energy transformation for green and sustainable growth.

The Vietnamese leader told his guests that Vietnam prioritizes and encourages green and sustainable financial development, especially the development of a green bond market, so as to support its national green growth strategy for the 2021-2030 period and vision to 2050, and its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 made at COP26, adding that Vietnam also participates in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with developed nations and regards these as key agreements resulting from the major effort of all parties.

Vietnam holds significant potential to develop solar and wind energy, he went on. However, electricity development plans must be based on a general consideration of related factors such as electricity generation sources, electricity transmission and distribution, and electricity usage and price.

In energy transformation and climate change response, Vietnam is continuing to perfect its institutions and policies, complete its national power development master plan, develop its renewable energy industry, increase the quality of its human resources, and apply new technologies to cut the cost of renewable energy production to compete with other energy sources, the Prime Minister said.

Mr. Cooper highlighted Vietnam’s commitment to climate change response made at COP26 and expressed his bank’s hopes for cooperation with Vietnam in the implementation of its JETP, adding that Standard Chartered welcomes Vietnam’s efforts in renewable energy development.
