PM: science-technology important driving force for economic growth

Science and technology and innovation serve as a foundation for rapid and sustainable development and are important driving forces to boost economic growth, create breakthroughs for productivity and increase national competitive edge, according to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Addressing  a ceremony held on May 15 to mark the Vietnamese Science and Technology Day (May 18) and the 65th founding anniversary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the PM noted that science-technology is a vital element for the country to catch up with the world amidst the fourth industrial revolution-related technology boom.

He cited the success stories from some most technologically advanced countries in the world, where science-technology played a great role.

The 2021-2030 socio-economic development strategies affirmed that human resources development associated with science-technology and innovation is one of three strategic breakthroughs and the top policy for rapid and sustainable growth in the next period, according to the Government leader.

He asked relevant sectors to complete related mechanisms, attract and diversify resources for science-technology, develop sci-tech market, and paid due attention to the R&D activities.

 Over the past 65 years, achievements in science-technology and innovation have become a foundation and driver for the country’s sustainable development, the PM said, adding that science-technology has contributed more than 30% to the agricultural sector’s added value, with value of hi-tech products rising over 40% in 2019.
