Vietnam Airlines participates in IATA's CO2 emissions measurement project
The first Vietnamese airline to take part in the project, contributing to the goal of reducing net emissions to "zero".
Within the framework of the recent IATA - Annual General Meeting 2024 in Dubai, Vietnam Airlines signed a cooperation agreement to participate in the CO2 emissions measurement project (CO2 Connect) developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and became the first Vietnamese airline to take part in this project.
According to the agreement, Vietnam Airlines will provide data for IATA to calculate average emissions data per passenger for each route and aircraft type.
Currently, reducing CO2 emissions and sustainable development is one of the top goals of the world aviation industry. However, the declaration and measurement of CO2 emissions have been carried out by different methods, leading to inconsistency in indicators used by different airlines to measure the emissions.
Therefore, IATA developed the CO2 Connect project to create a common platform for airlines to declare and measure CO2 emissions accurately, transparently and consistently. This project uses the RP-1726 method, a highly reliable methodology that complies with most of the standards of member airlines and the general aviation industry.
The CO2 Connect project can support airlines and passengers in making effective decisions and implementing practical solutions based on environmental data.
Many major airlines in the world have participated in this project such as: American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Qatar Airways, among others.
Participating in the CO2 Connect project affirms Vietnam Airlines' efforts in its sustainable development strategy, contributing to the goal of reducing net emissions to "zero" (also known as "Net zero") by 2050 as Vietnam had committed at COP26.
Vietnam Airlines has become the first airline in Vietnam to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for commercial passenger flights, since it successfully conducted a flight using this kind of fuel, with flight number VN660 flying from Singapore to Hanoi on May 27.
In the coming time, the airline will coordinate with Con Dao island in southern Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to implement the "sustainable flight route" project with environmental protection activities, reducing plastic waste, contributing to preserving the landscape and living environment.
