VinFast, GSM & Gojek to promote green transportation in Indonesia
New MoU expected to open up opportunities for cooperation and marks a significant step for VinFast and GSM in their global market expansion in 2024.
Vietnamese electric vehicle and motorcycle manufacturer VinFast and pure electric taxi service GSM, in cooperation with Southeast Asian unicorn Gojek, are taking a significant step towards promoting green transportation in Indonesia.
The recent signing of an MoU with prominent Indonesian tech company PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk, the owner of the Gojek transportation services platform, represents a partnership to introduce sustainable rental and taxi services in the Southeast Asian country. The agreement was reported at the recent High-level Indonesia-Vietnam Business Dialogue, attended by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
According to VinFast, this cooperation aims to encourage Gojek drivers in Indonesia to transition to electric vehicles, contributing to a reduction in transportation emissions. Indonesian consumers will have the opportunity to experience the 5-star GSM travel service, powered by VinFast’s environmentally-friendly electric vehicles.
In addition to VinFast’s green transportation plans, GSM has revealed an ambitious investment strategy, with plans to allocate up to $900 million in Indonesia in the near future. By aligning with Gojek, VinFast and GSM affirm their dedication to supporting the Indonesian Government’s ambitious goals in transportation emissions reductions.
According to Mr. Thanh Nguyen, CEO of GSM and Deputy CEO of VinFast, he previously met with a leader from Gojek in Hanoi to discuss potential opportunities for cooperation in the large and dynamic Indonesian market. VinFast, GSM, and Gojek share a common vision of jointly contributing to the development of sustainable transportation and providing high-quality services to customers. In this regard, the new agreement also opens up possibilities for cooperation and marks a new milestone for both VinFast and GSM in their international market expansion efforts in 2024.
As previously disclosed, VinFast intends to make a long-term investment of at least $1.2 billion in Indonesia. In the initial stage, in addition to delivering vehicles imported from Vietnam to Indonesian customers, VinFast will allocate $200 million to set up an electric vehicle manufacturing facility in the country, with an estimated production capacity of 30,000 to 50,000 units a year.
For his part, President Widodo extended a warm welcome and expressed optimism about increased cooperation and investment from prominent Vietnamese businesses in Indonesia. He encouraged support for Indonesia’s goals, in particular emphasizing investments in the new Nusantara Capital region. Furthermore, President Widodo committed to facilitating VinFast in navigating investment procedures for their manufacturing and business operations in Indonesia.
