Ericsson and RMIT University came together on August 18 to establish the RMIT & Ericsson AI Lab on RMIT’s campus in Hanoi, in the presence of the Swedish and Australian Ambassadors to Vietnam.

The joint initiative extends the existing 5G education partnership between Ericsson and RMIT, aimed at educating Vietnamese students about 5G and emerging technologies. The goal of the cooperative endeavor is to support various sectors, including energy, manufacturing, agriculture, transport, and logistics, in adopting Industry 4.0 through AI solutions.

The activities of the AI Lab will encompass practical training in areas like 5G, AI/ML, AR/VR, automation, cloud and edge computing, and blockchain. The focus is on joint research and the implementation of AI applications relevant to industries in Vietnam, including manufacturing, energy, education, transport, and logistics. Their partnership is also centered around applying AI to Industry 4.0 advancements, facilitated by the rollout of 5G in Vietnam.

Moreover, the AI Lab will foster connections between Ericsson, RMIT, and the community, potentially creating a broader ecosystem in the domains of AI and communications technology. The ecosystem will leverage 5G as a crucial national infrastructure, contributing to the growth of startups and innovation around the country while enhancing the skills of the future workforce.

“Our links in industry, such as this growing partnership with Ericsson, ensure graduates have the practical skills necessary to succeed in fast-evolving business environments, filling emerging skills gaps and assisting Vietnam’s transition to a value-added economy,” said Professor Claire Macken, Pro Vice-Chancellor and General Director of RMIT Vietnam.

“The 5G-ready young talent and AI applications that this cooperation expects to produce will serve to accelerate Vietnam’s Industry 4.0 agenda as well as its ambition to become an AI hub in ASEAN by 2030,” said Mr. Denis Brunetti, President & CEO of Ericsson Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. “Indeed, it will drive and create the next wave of sustained and inclusive socio-economic development in Vietnam, enabled by science and technology and innovation.”
