Meta sees Vietnam as crucial to future of global AI
Vietnam will play a significant role in the global AI ecosystem.
Professor Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist and Vice President of Meta, believes Vietnam will play a significant role in the global AI ecosystem due to its strategic roadmap for semiconductor development.
During a meeting with Minister of Information and Communications, Nguyen Manh Hung, on December 6, Prof. LeCun highlighted Vietnam's development of its semiconductor industry as a key factor in becoming a crucial part of the global supply chain.
Meta's open-source large language model, Llama (Meta AI), is already widely used by Vietnamese and international businesses. The combination of a thriving semiconductor industry with data centers, software, and AI applications will drive significant changes in Vietnam's future, according to the professor.
He further emphasized that the future of AI development will rely on leveraging data centers located in various countries, combined with open-source solutions. This approach will enable the creation of AI models that understand the cultural and ethnic nuances of each nation—a feat beyond the capacity of any single company to achieve independently, he noted, adding that Meta is proactively embracing this trend, focusing its research on next-generation AI with a strong emphasis on open-source AI.
Minister Hung shared Vietnam's AI development vision, aiming to create AI as a virtual assistant for individuals.
“Each organization and company would have its private AI, and every Vietnamese citizen would possess a personalized virtual assistant, trained on their own data and knowledge for personal use,” said Minister Hung.
He expressed hope for continued and expanded collaboration between Meta and Vietnamese businesses to develop AI aligned with this shared vision.
He also requested Meta to enhance its AI application in cleaning up "junk" content on Facebook, particularly within the Marketplace.
The minister suggested Meta needs a significant shift in its approach, urging it to be seen not just as a business operating in Vietnam, but as a partner committed to creating a healthy online environment on Facebook for the benefit of the community.
