Priority placed on Chu Lai airport expansion after merger of Quang Nam and Da Nang
Under the proposed plan, Chu Lai is projected to handle up to 30 million passengers annually by 2050.

The Ministry of Construction has submitted a report to the Government on a planning and investment model for upgrading Chu Lai Airport in the former province of Quang Nam (now Da Nang City) in the central region, aimed at transforming it into a key regional aviation hub.
According to the report, the ministry has directed the development of a draft master plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a long-term vision to 2050. The draft plan is currently under consultation with relevant agencies and is expected to be finalized by September 2025.
In coordination with the Da Nang City People’s Committee, the ministry has agreed to prioritize the upgrade of Chu Lai Airport to help alleviate infrastructure pressure on Da Nang International Airport. Under the proposed plan, Chu Lai is projected to handle up to 30 million passengers annually by 2050.
This shift comes in the wake of the recent administrative merger between former Da Nang City and former Quang Nam Province, prompting a review of planning and development strategies for the region’s two major airports.
Accordingly, the master plan for Da Nang International Airport will be adjusted to accommodate approximately 20 million passengers per year, while investment priority will be given to expanding Chu Lai Airport to support the region’s broader socio-economic development goals.
According to a draft amendment submitted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), the 2021–2030 phase will see Chu Lai Airport upgraded to handle 10 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo annually.
Looking ahead to 2050, the airport will feature two additional terminals, T3 and T4, each designed to handle 10 million passengers annually; and a cargo terminal system capable of processing 3 million tons of cargo per year.
