Leveraging its 250 km coastline and rich marine ecosystem, northern Quang Ninh Province is actively implementing a range of solutions to develop a sustainable fisheries economy while protecting the environment. The province aims to position itself as northern Vietnam’s leading center for eco-friendly aquaculture.

By the end of 2024, Quang Ninh reported an inland aquaculture area of 32,092 hectares and a marine farming area of approximately 10,200 ha, cultivating many high-value commercial species.

A key strategy driving this transformation is the shift from small-scale inland aquaculture to large-scale marine farming. By 2030, the province targets expanding its marine farming area to 13,400 ha, establishing concentrated production zones for species such as shrimp, grouper, and sentinel crab, as well as integrated shrimp-and-fish systems. The plan also encourages the cultivation of mollusks, including clams and oysters, on tidal flats.

According to the province's Department of Agriculture and Environment, large-scale marine farming not only reduces pressure on wild-capture fisheries but also supports the restoration of rare aquatic species. The province has also designated and allocated sea surface areas to households, ensuring strict management and oversight of aquaculture operations.

Quang Ninh is further advancing its strategy by promoting modern, industrial-scale marine farming models, featuring high-tech applications such as water recirculation systems, IoT sensors, and artificial intelligence (AI). These innovations aim to ensure high and stable productivity, minimize environmental risks from natural disasters and disease, and promote long-term ecological and economic sustainability.
