Resolution on reorganization of provincial-level administrative units officially approved
Under a resolution approved by the National Assembly on June 12, Vietnam has 34 centrally-run cities and provinces.

A resolution on reorganization of provincial-level administrative units was officially approved by the 15th National Assebbly at its ongoing ninth sitting in Hanoi on June 12.
Under the Resolution, which takes effect from the date of its adoption, Vietnam has 34 centrally-run cities and provinces, much fewer than its previous 63.
Among them, 4 centrally-run cities and 19 provinces are newly formed as a result of the reorganization specified in Article 1 of the Resolution. While 11 other cities and provinces remain unchanged, including 9 provinces: Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Lai Chau, Lang Son, Nghe An, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, and Son La; and 2 cities: Hanoi and Hue.
As a result, 6 centrally-run cities are Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Hue, Da Nang and Can Tho.
Meanwhile 28 provinces are: Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Dak Lak, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Vinh Long, Dong Thap, Ca Mau, and An Giang.
