Sustainability and culture: key to Vietnam's textile success in the Nordics
The EU's commitment to the Sustainable Textiles Strategy presents numerous opportunities for Vietnamese textile and garment businesses.
Vietnamese textile and garment businesses have an opportunity to solidify their position in the international market by merging sustainability with cultural heritage.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Thuy, Trade Counselor of Vietnam in Sweden and the Nordic countries, a sustainable fashion market requires not only high-quality products but also adherence to the increasingly stringent sustainability standards set by the EU, including the Nordic countries.
This focus on sustainability is highlighted by the EU’s new Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, announced in March 2022. The strategy aims to reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry, enhance resource efficiency, and promote product circularity.
Ms. Thuy points out that as one of the world’s largest textile exporters, Vietnam has a unique opportunity to penetrate this niche market. The EU's commitment to the Sustainable Textiles Strategy presents numerous opportunities for Vietnamese textile and garment businesses, especially given the rising trend of sustainable fashion consumption in Northern Europe.
"We possess several advantages to capitalize on this market, including abundant natural resources. Vietnam boasts a wealth of organic materials like organic cotton, bamboo, reeds, and natural silk, all of which are favored by Nordic consumers. These materials are easily biodegradable, free from harmful chemicals, and align with the EU's environmental protection standards," Ms. Thuy emphasized.
Moreover, traditional handicrafts meet the dual demands of sustainability and cultural richness. Vietnam’s silk weaving, hand embroidery, and traditional garment production can produce sustainable and unique fashion items. These products not only respect the environment but also carry significant cultural value, appealing to Nordic consumers seeking distinctiveness.
