The National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period and vision to 2045 was approved by the Appraisal Council on April 26 and will pave way for the development of renewable energy. The plan is expected to be submitted to the Prime Minister for approval in May.

To expand its market and realize its goal of becoming the leading renewable energy developer in Vietnam, the T&T Group has cooperated with Phongsubthavy - the leading Lao energy corporation - to develop renewable energy projects in Vietnam’s neighbor, with a total capacity of about 2,500 MW. Laos is considered to have great potential for renewable energy sources.

Its sunshine and breeze are invaluable resources for the development of renewable energy in south-central Ninh Thuan province. Under its planning, Ninh Thuan will be a gateway connecting the Southern Key Economic Region with provinces in the southern reaches of the central highlands and the south-central coast. It will develop its economy based on six pillar industries: energy, tourism, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, industry, education, and construction and real estate.

Mr. Håkan Agnevall, Chairman and CEO of the Wärtsilä Group, in an interview with VnEconomy, expressed a belief that Vietnam has the potential to achieve its net-zero emissions goal and could see a renewable energy revolution in the years to come.

Vietnam’s renewable energy sector has great potential and abundant development space, and has developed quite strongly over recent years. The legal system to attract investment is incomplete, however, and there are no effective solutions for investors when participating in the renewable energy market.

Renewable energy is considered to play an important role in Vietnam’s process of industrialization and modernization. But energy transformation poses many challenges that require appropriate strategies, roadmaps, and mechanisms as well as technological and financial support from countries and organizations around the world.

Output in the entire electricity network reached 151.65 billion kWh in the first seven months of 2021, up 6.2 per cent year-on-year. Renewable energy output stood at 17.35 billion kWh, accounting for 11.4 per cent of the total.
