Revenue and profit growth in the last quarter of 2021 have been financing the aviation sector in the beginning of 2022 as questions linger over growth prospects.
Twenty foreign airlines and three Vietnamese carriers - Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Bamboo Airways - are now operating routes to or from Vietnam from or to 20 countries and territories. It is expected that local airlines will carry 141,600 international passengers in the first quarter, up 441 per cent year-on-year, while international cargo transport will reach 38,000 tons, up 113.9 per cent.
On October 10, the first day of domestic flights being reopened, only eleven official commercial flights were conducted, while 27 others were canceled due to storms and local quarantine regulations.
Bamboo Airways has been granted slots for direct flights to the US, starting this September, making it the first Vietnamese airline to operate direct flights to the US. Vietnam Airlines has been granted permission to operate 12 flights carrying Vietnamese citizens from the US back home in 2021, starting on June 22. Although there are difficulties awaiting and the number of flights decreased in the first 5 months of 2021, most experts are positive that the launch of Covid-19 Vaccine Fund will boost the recovery of the economy and aviation.
