Vietnam asks EU for vaccine support

Vietnam is facing many difficulties in securing sufficient doses of Covid-19 vaccines for its population of nearly 100 million as well as medical equipment for disease prevention. State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent letters to Mr. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, respectively, requesting EU support in Covid-19 vaccines and have asked COVAX to prioritize allocations to Vietnam and ASEAN countries.

Poland donates Covid-19 vaccine to Vietnam

The Polish Government has decided to donate more than 501,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Vietnam and has ceded 3 million additional doses and donated medical equipment and supplies worth $4 million. Vietnam is the first non-European country to which Poland has provided vaccines and medical equipment.

Vietnam is Russia’s largest supplier of coffee but its coffee brands are hard to find on the shelves of Russian supermarket chains because 99 per cent of exports are raw coffee. Vietnam’s rice exports to Russia have also fallen due to rising prices. Some agricultural products and processed agricultural products from Vietnam have reached Russia’s retail network, such as mangos, chili sauce, dipping sauce, pomelos, and dragon fruit, but in limited quantities.

Vietnamese satellite to launch by March

Vietnam’s NanoDragon satellite was sent to Japan on August 11 and is expected to be launched before March. The satellite was developed to demonstrate the application of nano-scale satellite technology in integrating an Automatic Identification System (AIS) to track and monitor vessels at sea. It is a product of a Vietnam Space Center development roadmap for “Made in Vietnam” micro-satellites.

Vietnam’s seafood industry will lose about $480 million a year if it receives a “red card” from the European Commission (EC) for illegal fishing. The industry’s capacity would reduce by at least 30 per cent if the “red card” was imposed for two or three years. Seafood currently contributes about 5 per cent of GDP and employs 4.7 million workers. The EU is Vietnam’s fifth-largest seafood market.

On August 10, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Health and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology announced the results of a preclinical study on a Covid-19 treatment drug called VIPDERVIR, which is made from high quality ingredients of herbal origin in Vietnam. The drug will continue to be researched at the clinical stage, hopefully by the end of the year there will be results to be considered for licensing.

The risk of continued community transmission of Covid-19 in Vietnam is very high, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Vaccinations are key to ending the pandemic, but are not the only measure, as they alone cannot end community transmission. The Ministry of Health’s “5K” strategy therefore needs to be continued. 600,000 more AstraZeneca doses arrive

Nearly 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine have recently arrived in Vietnam. This is the seventh delivery under a contract signed between the Vietnam Vaccine Joint Stock Company (VNVC) and AstraZeneca for 30 million doses. AstraZeneca is the most used vaccine in the country and has been available since March.
