During State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s official visit to Cuba between September 18 - 20, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Cuba’s Ministry of Food Industry signed an action plan on the implementation of the Cuban Aquaculture Support Project Phase III. Other documents signed focus on biological products, food safety, and sustainable agricultural production.

Big brands are suffering from the severe impact of Covid-19 in Vietnam. Global financial services firm BTIG has predicted that production activities in the country will return to 50 per cent of capacity by the end of this year and 100 per cent in 2022.

Though production around Vietnam has been suspended at this point in time and some businesses have decided to temporarily assign orders to their operations in other countries, European businesses still wish to invest long-term in Vietnam.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue met on September 8 with Mr. Charles Mitchen, President of the European Council (EC), where he expressed a hope that leaders of the EC and the European Commission would support cooperation in vaccine production so that Vietnam could become a regional production center.

Bilateral trade increased 18.4 per cent in the year since the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) took effect. The EVFTA will only be successful with concerted efforts from both the Vietnamese and European business communities. Administrative procedures remain the greatest barrier for EU companies in Vietnam.

While electric cars are not yet popular in Vietnam, the country plans for them to completely dominate the market by 2045. Problems in infrastructure must therefore be addressed and a mechanism to encourage sales introduced.

Nikkei Asia’s Covid-19 Recovery Index evaluates 121 countries and territories based on infection management, vaccine rollouts, and social mobility at the end of each month. Vietnam, once a “star” in successfully controlling the pandemic, is now recording a high number of infections and fatalities, and so ranks 121st on the list.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the 2021 Global Trade in Services Summit on September 2 via video, at the invitation of Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping. In his address, the Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam is willing to cooperate with other countries to build a suitable legal framework to promote the development of the digital economy, thus contributing to the global economy.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan has participated in an online consultation with 29 international partners on sustainable agriculture and rural development. The Minister emphasized the importance of agriculture as an economic sector closely linked with cultural and social factors, sustainable development trends, and global thinking. He also affirmed that, in the future, Vietnam will develop responsible and multi-value agriculture.
