Vietnam posted a trade deficit of $1.36 billion for the first half of August, bringing the year-to-date deficit to $3.88 billion. FDI enterprises posted a surplus, however, with export turnover of more than $145 billion as of August 15 and import turnover of $130.82 billion.

Vietnam is Russia’s largest supplier of coffee but its coffee brands are hard to find on the shelves of Russian supermarket chains because 99 per cent of exports are raw coffee. Vietnam’s rice exports to Russia have also fallen due to rising prices. Some agricultural products and processed agricultural products from Vietnam have reached Russia’s retail network, such as mangos, chili sauce, dipping sauce, pomelos, and dragon fruit, but in limited quantities.

Seafood at risk of losses in EU

Vietnam’s seafood industry will lose about $480 million a year if it receives a “red card” from the European Commission (EC) for illegal fishing. The industry’s capacity would reduce by at least 30 per cent if the “red card” was imposed for two or three years. Seafood currently contributes about 5 per cent of GDP and employs 4.7 million workers. The EU is Vietnam’s fifth-largest seafood market.

Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US and European markets increased sharply in the first quarter of 2021, by 21 per cent year-on-year to $355 billion. Kitchen furniture finding favor in North America and Europe

Vietnam’s wooden kitchen furniture is gaining in popularity in the US, the EU, the UK, and Canada thanks to beautiful designs and high quality. In the first half of this year, export turnover of such products was $480 million, up 67 per cent compared to the same period of 2020. The biggest export item was kitchen cabinets, with turnover of $287.5 million, up 78.9 per cent year-on-year and accounting for 73.5 per cent of the total. Kitchen tables followed, with $47.6 million, up 37.5 per cent, while wooden trolley exports rose 563.3 per cent to $2.6 million. Some 76.3 per cent of export turnover came from the US, up 85.9 per cent year-on-year. Exports to the EU rose 68.1 per cent and to Canada by 188.3 per cent.

US importing more Vietnamese fruit & vegetables

The turnover of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables exported to the US reached $57.4 million in the first four months of 2021, a 16.6 per cent increase year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The US Department of Agriculture has predicted that the total value of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables exported to the US this year may total $15.1 billion.

June 12, Vietnamese lychee continued to enter the French market, following the success of lychee being exported to the Czech Republic. France is considered as the second largest lychee import market after the Netherlands, therefore, the potential for Vietnamese lychees in the French market is huge. This is also the chance to bring more high quality products of Vietnam present in this large market.
