According to the “Vietnam Automotive Aftermarket: Outlook to 2025” report from Ken Research, aftermarket services in Vietnam’s automotive sector are expected to grow further in the immediate future due to the increasing number of Vietnamese people owning motor cars.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai and Canada’s Chief Trade Commissioner and Assistant Deputy Minister at Global Affairs Canada Sara Wilshaw signed an MoU on January 11 establishing a Joint Economic Committee between the two countries. They aim to establish a comprehensive cooperation framework through the joint committee mechanism to facilitate trade and investment and support enterprises from both countries.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for the Western Pacific, Mr. Takeshi Kasai, Vietnam has contributed to supporting countries in regard to pandemic prevention and control and has made active contributions to WHO and the COVAX mechanism. Thanks to the success of its vaccine strategy, it has become among the six leading countries in vaccine coverage in the world. At the moment, 99.98 per cent of its population aged 18 years and over has received at least one dose of vaccine, while 93.6 per cent has had the full basic dose and 11.5 per cent has had the booster dose.

On January 8, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed Lao Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh on an official visit to Vietnam. The two sides focused on exchanging measures to raise economic cooperation and promote links between the two economies, including infrastructure links and logistics development.

Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung has told an extra-ordinary session of the National Assembly on January 7 that about 42 per cent of Vietnam’s economic recovery package will be implemented and disbursed in 2022 and the remainder next year. The government will also ensure transparency and anti-corruption in fiscal and monetary policies.

Vietnam was highly evaluated in 2021 by three credit rating agencies and the country signed 12 loan agreements totaling nearly $1 billion. However, facing slow disbursement of foreign capital, Deputy Minister of Finance Tran Xuan Ha suggested it is necessary to remove obstacles in disbursement and loan management.

2021 has seen a strong breakthrough in the information and communications industry, moving the country towards digital transformation. And 2022 will be a year of further promoting digital transformation in all industries nationwide and implementing new strategies on digital infrastructure, data, digital technology, and digital technology enterprises.

The monthly income of Vietnam’s poorest group of workers reached VND1.13 million ($49.36) in 2020, an increase of VND151,000 ($6.56) compared to 2019. Meanwhile, the earnings of the group of “high income” workers stood at VND8 million ($350), down VND1.1 million ($48.07) compared to 2019, due to the heavy impact of the pandemic.

During his official visit to Russia, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc held talks with President Vladimir Putin on November 30 in Moscow. At a meeting with State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on November 28 in Switzerland, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweal emphasized that Vietnam has made many improvements since 2007, when the country joined the body, in GDP growth and poverty reduction, and in being in the top 20 largest exporting countries in the world. This is a miracle, she said, and Vietnam is an example for many developing countries to follow.

The construction of a 220kV transmission line from Nam Mo in Laos to Tuong Duong in Vietnam's north-central Nghe An province is part of an agreement signed by the two governments, under which Vietnam will import about 3,000 MW of electricity from Laos by 2025 and up to 5,000 MW by 2030. The new transmission line is expected to supply northern Vietnam.

The Danish Statistical Office (Denmark Statistics) and the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) signed an agreement on November 26. Denmark will provide DKK6.5 million (about $1 million) to help Vietnam compile complete and reliable official statistics under international standards.

A resurgence in banking stocks over recent days helped the VN-Index climb to a new record in hitting 1,500 points. This shows that bad debts rising but kept under control has not affected banking stocks to any great extent and the expansion of credit would take them even higher.
