During an official phone call with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Austrian Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz said the country will assist Vietnam in strengthening ties with the EU and removing the “yellow card” on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Bilateral trade increased 18.4 per cent in the year since the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) took effect. The EVFTA will only be successful with concerted efforts from both the Vietnamese and European business communities. Administrative procedures remain the greatest barrier for EU companies in Vietnam.
Galvanized steel sheet exports to Europe will remain stable until the end of 2022 thanks to favorable trade policies and growing demand. Exports may face greater challenges in 2023, as the EU can then apply a carbon border adjustment mechanism.
Vietnam is facing many difficulties in securing sufficient doses of Covid-19 vaccines for its population of nearly 100 million as well as medical equipment for disease prevention. State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent letters to Mr. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, respectively, requesting EU support in Covid-19 vaccines and have asked COVAX to prioritize allocations to Vietnam and ASEAN countries.
Vietnam’s seafood industry will lose about $480 million a year if it receives a “red card” from the European Commission (EC) for illegal fishing. The industry’s capacity would reduce by at least 30 per cent if the “red card” was imposed for two or three years. Seafood currently contributes about 5 per cent of GDP and employs 4.7 million workers. The EU is Vietnam’s fifth-largest seafood market.
Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US and European markets increased sharply in the first quarter of 2021, by 21 per cent year-on-year to $355 billion. The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has, however, predicted that growth may slow in the months to come because of higher transportation costs.
Vietnam’s wooden kitchen furniture is gaining in popularity in the US, the EU, the UK, and Canada thanks to beautiful designs and high quality. In the first half of this year, export turnover of such products was $480 million, up 67 per cent compared to the same period of 2020. The biggest export item was kitchen cabinets, with turnover of $287.5 million, up 78.9 per cent year-on-year and accounting for 73.5 per cent of the total. Kitchen tables followed, with $47.6 million, up 37.5 per cent, while wooden trolley exports rose 563.3 per cent to $2.6 million. Some 76.3 per cent of export turnover came from the US, up 85.9 per cent year-on-year. Exports to the EU rose 68.1 per cent and to Canada by 188.3 per cent.
Figures from CCIFI show that many of Vietnam’s exports to the EU grew by more than 10 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2021, confirming export opportunities for key products such as textiles, seafood, furniture, and wooden products in Europe. Businesses, however, must meet certain standards and requirements.
