Vietnam keen to tap US experience in developing financial markets

At a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in Washington D.C. on May 11, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam-US cooperation in finance, currency, and economics and commerce have seen positive development over the years. He added that Vietnam hopes the US will share its experience in developing financial markets, especially the stock market and also the real estate market, in a safe and transparent manner.

Trade & investment key to Vietnam - US relations

At the invitation of US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will lead a Vietnamese delegation attending the ASEAN-US Special Summit in Washington D.C. and then make a working visit to the United States and the United Nations from May 11 to 17. Ahead of the visit, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son answered questions from the Associated Press on the relationship between Vietnam and the US. Trade and investment are important and potential drivers of Vietnam-US relations into the future, he answered. The US is Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner, while Vietnam is the ninth-largest trading partner of the US and an important destination for US investors.

During a meeting on February 23 with the US President’s Special Envoy John Kerry, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc affirmed that the US is one of Vietnam’s most important partners and that projects from the country are very much appreciated. Tuna exports to US and Europe up sharply

Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US and European markets increased sharply in the first quarter of 2021, by 21 per cent year-on-year to $355 billion. The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has, however, predicted that growth may slow in the months to come because of higher transportation costs.

Kitchen furniture finding favor in North America and Europe

Vietnam’s wooden kitchen furniture is gaining in popularity in the US, the EU, the UK, and Canada thanks to beautiful designs and high quality. In the first half of this year, export turnover of such products was $480 million, up 67 per cent compared to the same period of 2020. The biggest export item was kitchen cabinets, with turnover of $287.5 million, up 78.9 per cent year-on-year and accounting for 73.5 per cent of the total. Kitchen tables followed, with $47.6 million, up 37.5 per cent, while wooden trolley exports rose 563.3 per cent to $2.6 million. Some 76.3 per cent of export turnover came from the US, up 85.9 per cent year-on-year. Exports to the EU rose 68.1 per cent and to Canada by 188.3 per cent.

US importing more Vietnamese fruit & vegetables

The turnover of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables exported to the US reached $57.4 million in the first four months of 2021, a 16.6 per cent increase year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The US Department of Agriculture has predicted that the total value of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables exported to the US this year may total $15.1 billion.
