Although the number of Covid-19 infections rose rapidly in most cities and provinces in Vietnam during the first quarter of 2022 due to the Omicron variant, the number of people employed in the period still increased compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year, especially in the services sector. However, Vietnam’s labor market still has some unsustainable elements, with unemployment and underemployment both remaining high.

Covid-19 has significantly affected Vietnam’s labor market and caused a sharp decline in workforce numbers. The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs is drafting a program to restore and develop the labor market, with mechanisms and policies focusing on seven major solutions.

Vietnam’s labor market was hit hard by Covid-19 but 70 to 75 per cent of workers have returned to industrial zones and processing zones, with the figure even reaching 90 per cent in some localities, according to Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung. He also predicted that the labor market will return to normal by the second quarter of 2022.
