More social housing on way in HCMC

Ho Chi Minh City will kick-off construction this month of four new projects in social housing, worker accommodation, and upgrades to old apartment blocks, bringing more than 3,000 units on to the market. Under planning, the city is to develop 2.5 million sq m of social housing in the 2021-2025 period, or 35,000 apartments.

Exporters in Ho Chi Minh City are facing a range of difficulties, such as soaring sea freight costs, a lack of input materials, and a shortage of workers. The city has therefore developed a project on export development to 2025 and vision to 2030, which sets an average annual export growth target of 9.5 per cent in the 2021-2025 period and 9 per cent in the 2026-2030 period.

There are currently 474 old apartment buildings in Ho Chi Minh City in need of renovation, of which 237 Grade-D (Dangerous) buildings cannot be renovated and must be demolished. The city plans to demolish 14 Grade-D apartments this year and build new blocks.

Ho Chi Minh City has proposed holding an auction of land along Ring Road No. 3, to acquire capital for construction. The route passes through the city and Binh Duong, Dong Nai, and Long An provinces and has total investment of VND83.3 trillion ($3.6 billion). After nearly ten years of construction, however, only 16.3 km has been built due to financial difficulties.

Ho Chi Minh City has developed a socio-economic development plan for 2022 with 19 targets, of which gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth is to reach 6-6.5 per cent. In the third session of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council, tenure X, 2021-2026 term, the city proposed building the Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai Expressway connecting it with the Moc Bai border gate in Tay Ninh province. Total investment in the first phase from 2021 to 2025 is VND15.9 trillion ($700 million).

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Architecture has just sent a report to the City People's Committee on the review of land funds along metro lines, highways and ring roads in the area. Accordingly, there are 10 projects around the station of metro line 2. In which, there are 4 projects that have been approved with the list and recorded capital for implementation; 2 projects (Tao Dan station and Bay Hien station) have been approved, but have not yet recorded capital for implementation; 1 project around Pham Van Hai station is being implemented to perform tasks; 3 projects in the area around Le Thi Rieng, Dan Chu and Hoa Hung stations are conducting bidding to select consultants.
