Cyberattacks surge in 2024, targeting Vietnamese agencies and businesses

Vietnamese agencies and businesses have faced continuous and serious challenges in cyberspace in 2024, particularly with a significant increase in the number and scale of cyberattacks.

Many serious incidents targeted major businesses and organizations such as VNDirect, PVOIL, Vietnam Post, and various healthcare and educational institutions, demonstrating that any sector can be a target for cybercriminals.

According to a report from the National Cybersecurity Association, 46.15% of agencies and businesses reported experiencing at least one cyberattack in the past year, with 6.77% facing frequently. The total number of cyberattacks during the year is estimated to exceed 659,000.

A report from the Department of Cybersecurity and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05) under the Ministry of Public Security noted that critical units alone received over 74,000 cyberattack warnings, including 83 targeted advanced persistent threat (APT) campaigns.

The National Cybersecurity Association recommends that organizations regularly review system vulnerabilities, including comprehensive scanning and assessment of applications, software, and network devices, and promptly update security patches.

They should also implement 24/7 cybersecurity monitoring to detect early signs of anomalies and develop a clear incident response plan, ensuring regular data backup and recovery plans to minimize damage when incidents occur.
