Party General Secretary To Lam has signed a new Politburo
resolution on national energy security through 2030 with a vision to 2045,
setting out a comprehensive roadmap for the country’s energy transition.
The resolution emphasizes ensuring a secure and sustainable
energy supply, reducing emissions, and building a competitive, transparent, and
efficient energy market, while enhancing energy efficiency to meet demand from the country’s
rapid and sustainable development.
By 2030, Vietnam targets a total primary energy supply of 150–170
million tons of oil equivalent, with installed power capacity of 183–236 GW,
generating 560–624 billion kWh. Renewable energy is projected to account for 25–30%
of the total supply, while greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 15–35%
compared with a business-as-usual scenario.
Looking ahead to 2045, the country aims to establish a fully
modern, competitive, and sustainable energy sector, with infrastructure
connected both regionally and globally.
To achieve these goals, the resolution identifies several key
measures, including enhancing the regulatory framework; developing energy
infrastructure, including renewable, gas, and nuclear power, while phasing down
coal; promoting digitalization and energy-saving practices; strengthening
environmental protection and international cooperation; and encouraging greater
private investment in energy.
